  • Septimus Heap: Flyte - By Angie Sage

This book is the second installment about the character Septimus Heap.  Septimus is on a quest to rescue his kidnapped sister Jenna Heap from their evil brother Simon Heap.  Simon has resurrected the evil necromancer DomDaniel in exchange for his dark teachings.  Septimus and his wizard master Marcia must fight together to defeat DomDaniel and search for the long lost Flyte charm.

 

  • The Giver - By Lois Lowry

The setting is in a utopian society where society is controlled by strict rules and procedures to remove pain.  Pills are taken to suppress emotions.  As the main character Jonas is taken under the wing of The Giver, he is blessed and cursed with the memories of the past.  After taking a more in depth look on the society he has been raised in, Jonas makes a desperate attempt to escape the controlled world and save the baby Gabriel from the "release".

  • The Wizard of Oz - By L. Frank Baum

This is a story about a young girl named Dorothy who finds herself trapped within the mystical Land of Oz.  To return to her home in Kansas, Dorothy must seek out the Wizard of Oz who has the power to send her back.  Along her journey Dorothy runs into three companions, and together they set out to meet the great wizard.  However, Dorothy must face the Wicked Witch of the West and put an end to her tyranny before she is allowed to return home.

  • The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian - By C.S. Lewis

This book is the second installment to the mystical land of Narnia.  Peter, Susan, Edmund, and Lucy are magically transported back into the land of Narnia only to find that they are over a thousand years in the future from where they had left off.  During the time of their absence, evil invaders called Telmarines have seized Narnia and are commanded by their evil ruler King Miraz.  The rightful ruler Prince Caspian has gone into hiding, and now it is up to the heroes of Narnia to set things right.

  • The Chronicles of Narnia: The Horse and His Boy - By C.S. Lewis

This is the fifth book to the mystical land of Narnia.  The new protagonist Shasta is introduced to the story as a found child raised by a Calormene fishermen.  Shasta is sold by his surrogate father to a feudal lord and is introduced to Bree the talking horse.  Through the persuasion of Bree, Shasta agrees to flee and escape their captivity.  Shasta meets Aravis, a young Calormene princess, and they all travel together to flee the evil Calormene kingdom.  Throughout their travels Shasta rediscovers his identity and realizes his place to save the kingdom of Archenland and protect the land of Narnia.

  • Bunnicula Strikes Again - By James Howe

After finding vegetables that had been drained of their juices, Chester the cat has made the conclusion that Bunnicula has regressed to his old ways.  Harold the wise dog must stop Chester from killing Bennicula and help maintain order within the Monroe's family house of pets.  This book is written to be about animals with personified human characteristics.

  • The Time Warp Trio: Summer Reading is Killing Me! - By Jon Scieszka

Joe, Fred, and Sam are on a summer adventure that has turned very bad.  Fred accidently put a list of their reading material within The Book, and now what was contained on that list has sprawled to life.  Can the trio get themselves out of this mess?

  • Pinocchio - By Carlo Collodi

An enchanted pine log is taken by the master wood carver Geppetto and crafted into a masterpiece, a marionette that is alive, and his name is Pinocchio.  Pinocchio starts out as a very naive boy and gets himself into trouble by making poor decisions at the expense of his gracious father Geppetto.  The Turquoise Hair Fairy takes an interest in helping Pinocchio become a real boy, but he will need to prove himself as a good person.  Pinocchio continues on his journey through life to be reunited with his father as a family.

  • Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets - By J.K. Rowling

This is the second book in the immensely popular Harry Potter series.  Harry returns to Hogwarts Castle and is reacquainted with his friends Ron and Hermione.  Malicious creations from the past are mysteriously haunting Hogwarts as people are being turned into stone.  Harry and his friends want to find the source of these terrible events, so they start an investigation of their own which will lead them to the ominous Chamber of Secrets, and the Dark Lord.

  • Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince - By J.K. Rowling

This is the sixth installment in the Harry Potter series.  As Harry is taken under the private tutelage of Dumbledore, he is told of the Horcruxes and how they are connected to the reemergence of Lord Voldemort.  Harry has in his possession another connection to the past, an old potion book that once belonged to the Half-Blood Prince.  More of the past is reopened.

  • One-Hundred-And-One More Read-Aloud Classics - Edited by Pamela Horn
